Obsidian Entertainment is a video game developer founded by former employees of Black Isle Studios in Irvine, California that has developed many sequels to games with a pre-existing franchise. Their most recent game is Alpha Protocol.
Obsidian Entertainment's first and most widely known game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords, was the sequel to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which received IGN's Game of the Year. Knights of the Old Republic II was released for the PC on February 8, 2005. While KotOR 2 did not receive any awards, the game got generally high reviews from critics. Obsidian proceeded to work on sequels to the Neverwinter Nights series. On October 31, 2006, Obsidian released the sequel to Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2. It received generally positive reviews, comparable to those of KotOR 2. Not long after the game's completion, Obsidian began development on Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. After its release on October 9, 2007, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer started getting reviews from critics. Again, many were generous, but they were actually a little worse than the original NWN2. Nevertheless, Obsidian continued on schedule with the next installment, Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir. When released on November 18, 2008, the game got very mixed reviews. 1UP.com cited the game's solid roleplaying feel, giving it a B+ review. GameSpot as well as GameSpy however, criticized its weak story, giving the game a 6/10 and 5/10 respectively. Needless to say, NWN2:SoZ was not exactly a milestone for Obsidian.
